A Mnemonic Device for Bending Machine Bending Sequence

Bending machines, also known as press brakes, are essential tools in metalworking that can be used for bending and shaping metal sheets.  Correctly bending a sheet metal part requires the correct sequence of bends.  To help remember the proper sequence for bending metal sheets, we have developed a mnemonic device known as the "MMMM" rule.  This system helps to guide the operator in the proper order of bends for a consistent and precise result. 

The "MMMM" rule is as follows: 

Major Bend – The first bend, known as the major bend, is the bend closest to the edge of the sheet.  This bend is often the deepest and sets the overall shape for the part. 

Middle Bend – The middle bend comes after the major bend and is typically an acute angle bend that allows for the correct bend in the final shape. 

Minor Bend – Following the middle bend, the minor bend is used to create a relief bend in the part for better fit and function. 

Minor Bend – The final step in the sequence is another minor bend, which is often a shallow angle bend that helps to reinforce the shape of the part. 

By following the "MMMM" rule, operators can achieve consistent and precise bends for the sheet metal parts they are creating.
